The NBA’s All-Star weekend is a huge hit throughout the country. I wouldn’t say like the super bowl but people still love it. This year the 2017 All-Star weekend is going to be help in New Orleans on the weekend of February 17th through the 19th. The events were first supposed to be held in Charlotte but because of controversy over gender rights they moved it to New Orleans. For those who don’t know the All-Star weekend is a weekend full of events including the All-Star game, rookie vs sophomore game, celebrity game, the skills challenge, the three point contest, and finally the dunk contest. The rookie vs sophomore game is a game against the leagues best 1st year players vs the leagues best 2nd year players. The celebrity game is a game they play each year with the some of the countries hottest celebrities right now. Its pretty fun to watch. The skills challenge is a course more of the point guards participate in where they run through obstacles of basketball like situations to see who can get the best time. The 3 point contest is a contest where about five players all shoot the same amount of threes from the same spots and whoever makes the most in is the winner. The dunk contest is one of the more hype parts of All-Star weekend. Its when the leagues top dunkers do there best dunks in front of a panel of judges. They then get rated on a scale and qualify for the next round. when its all said and done there is one person crowned as the best dunker.
Here is a little clip from the 2016 dunk contest:
The most popular part of All Star weekend is the All-Star game. This is where the leagues top performers get voted to play on there conferences “All-Star” team. Its a pretty big honor. The two teams are divided into East and West. For the Western Conference starters the Warriors Steph Curry and Kevin Durant will be joined by Pelicans player Anthony Davis, Houston Rockets guard James Harden, and the San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard. I beleive the Thunders Russel Westbrook should be starting in front of Curry but that didnt happen. For the Eastern Conference the starters are Kyrie Irving, Jimmy Butler, Lebron James, Demar DeRozan, & Milwaukee Giannis Antetokounmpo, aka the Greek Freak. The All-Star Weekend is a unforgettable weekend that you will not want to miss.
